An Appreciation of Grasses

There are terms for collections or groups of animals (see http://www.hintsandthings.co.uk/kennel/collectives.htm) … like a “gaggle of geese,” a “pod of dolphin,” a “clutch of chickens,” and a “swarm of bees.” I’d like to suggest a term for grasses: …an appreciation of grasses.

You start with one clump, and suddenly your garden becomes a collection – an appreciation, if you will – of grasses! That dern sun lights them up late in the day. The wind creates virtual ballets in the garden with them., They fill in, bulk out, and obliterate garden holes.

Here you see our ladies (the Misses Canthus) creating delicious late-afternoon-delight at our place.

Oh, I know … by February these gals will have worn out their welcome as they get beaten up and knocked down by the elements. But for today…. Ah-h-h.

James Lipton, host of Inside the Actors Studio, wrote an excellent book on nouns of multitude called "An Exaltation of Larks", first published in 1968. It is an enjoyable, and often humorous, read.

And welcome from another PA Gardener.

I really like your term. I have a high regard for grasses... and you have such healthy appreciations! :-)
