Here Come The Naked Ladies!

One of my favorite flowers in the garden delights me every year at this time when it sends up a single stalk and proceeds to bloom with surprising speed. It’s Lycoris squamigera, or resurrection lily …. or naked ladies.

Some of my books assign the naked lady title to the Amaryllis belladonna, but they don’t list Lycoris at all, so I’m betting they’re the same …. or kissin’ cousins!

The bulb sends up strappy leaves in the spring. Then, the leaves vanish, and the flower stems materialize in late July/early August for their grand performance. The bulbs can be obtained for late autumn planting, and mine are in well-drained nice soil with partial sun. I also have some in full sun, and they appear to be happy too.

It’s the surprise element that gets me. …not a long lead-time while you watch leaves develop and buds build.

Oh, no …. slam, bam, thank-you-ma’am!

I feel like I just took a stroll through lovely garden places where it was peaceful and I had permission to walk. Our gardens are so full of surprises, and we don't even plan them. They just come. And the the birds and bees come to eat and sit and gather what they find. Thanks, Flower Fairies!

Such interesting info about some of the plants--I didn't know about naked ladies. We called them Magic Lilies when I was picking them in my mother's yard. I, too, have learned much from catalogs and wish I had the energy of 20 years ago to have created a garden that I would have been really proud of with knowledge that I have now. Carol

When I was a kid in Illinois the naked ladies were always a wonderful surprise for me. No leaves when they bloom and one day there is nothing and it seems like suddenly there are flowers. A wonderful neighbor brought me a bunch of the bulbs when we first moved to PA eight years ago. It was like getting a piece of my childhood back!
